Boundary Waters Spring Trip for 2006

June 2nd - June 10th,  2006

This is the CREW........everyone but me, since I'm taking the picture............
Front Row Left to Right: Jared, Jordan, Breanna, MadNat.
Back Row: Daphne, GadgetMan, Elise, Susan.
Natalie, Elise and Bree, at Gooseberry Falls. I really think the kids enjoyed this part of the trip. After being cooped up in the van for 12 hours, and then spending the night in a sub-par hotel, This was DEFINITELY needed.
Elise at Gooseberry Falls. Notice the pose........Everytime I get the camera out, the girls are "trained" to strike a pose. They are such photo hams........
Dave and Daphne at the Falls. Again, this was a GREAT stop for us........I'm glad we did it.
Here is Susan, my wife and me at Gooseberry Falls.
Bree, Elise, Jordan, and MadNat at Gooseberry Falls.
Jordon with the first fish of the trip. This was the first time he had caught a northern, and I also believe this was the first time EVER holding a fish. He really didn't like it........By the end of the week, he was OK.
GadgetMan with a REALLY nice 9lb northern. This fish took a tube jig. The fish was caught off a deep set of humps on Lake One. This was one of the areas we thought would product some decent smallmouth action. We were WRONG. Smallies were few and FAR between on this trip.
MadNat and Breanna on Lake One with me. This was a pretty tough day of paddling, as the wind was blowing pretty good, and neither of them are very good paddlers. By the end of the week, Bree and MadNat were both VERY comfortable in the canoe.
Jared and a nice hammer handle. Again, fishing was pretty tough this year.
This is a picture of our pantry in the cabin. We took WAY too much food. Even though we had lots of food, and lots of extra, and left over food, we did eat REALLY, REALLY good.
Susan and MadNat in the cabin. The accomodations were pretty good. I've been on a couple flyin trips, and these cabins are MUCH better than most of those type of cabins. Running water, electricity, kitchen, bathroom, and a fridge........These were definitely worth the $800 bucks we paid.
A view of the cooking and sink area of cabin 17. Like I said, the cabins were REALLY nice. We had some great food here, and preparation was very easy in these cabins.
The screen porch really acted as a "catch all" for the fishing gear. If you look really close, you will see LOTS of the stuff that I use for fishig up there. Many different "magic baits" are shown in this picture.
The only gripe, if I can call it a gripe..........I really wish there was some more room on the dock. Cabin 16 and 17 both share this single dock. If you had more than 3 canoes, it would be really TOUGH. Actually, the 3 canoes were tough to manage......
Elise and Bree outside out cabin. Notice the fan. Kawashiwi Lodge supplied this for us. It was used a little, but for the most part weather was GREAT. There were a couple days where it was hot in the cabin, but not too many.
This is a view of cabin 16. This is the cabin GadgetMan and Daphne and family rented. The two cabins are about 100 ft from each other. This is a GREAT way for 2 families to experience the area, or for 1 LARGE family. We ended up sharing many, MANY meals together.
GadgetMan and Family.
Susan and MadNat, in GadgetMan's cabin. Notice the air conditioner. It really made a difference in their cabin. But if I would have NOT been able to visit their cabin, cabin 17 without the air is just as good, and is a little bigger.
MadNat, Bree, and Elise at the Wolf Center. We were listening to one of the presentations. MadNat is holding a wolf fur. I believe this is one of the Canadian wolves, and not one of the Rocky Mountion wolves.
Susan holding a wolf pelt.
Dave and Jared at the wolf center.
Dave and Jordan fishing. This is below the first or second falls on the Kawashiwi River.
Jordan with his first smallmouth. This was probably the best day of fishing we had. We ended up portaging and paddling about 10-12 miles round trip in an attempt to find some decent fishing.
Elise on the Kawashiwi Falls trail. She really wanted to do some hiking, so this was one of the trails we decided to take. She was not too keen on fishing and canoeing, but all in all, I think she enjoyed herself.
A pretty picture of Kawashiwi Falls.
Susan and me with the falls in the background.
The family at the falls. MadNat, Susan, Me, Bree, and Elise........
Daphne sitting on a rock below Kawashiwi Falls. This was a pretty neat area. You cannot tell from the pic, but the area all around this rock is sandy, and windblown. It would be a GREAT place to kick back and have lunch. These are types of places in the Boundary Waters that I love.
Bree getting sprayed on by the waterfall. I really wish I would have figured out my new camera. This is really one of my favorite pictures, but it didn't turn out as good as I had hoped.

Out of all the kids, I think Bree probably had the BEST time.
MadNat and Elise at the Falls.
MadNat's Northern. She caught this one across the lake. She refused to take the northern off the hook, so they dragged it across the lake, back to the cabin. When she brought it up, it was still floppin, but the fish has been severly gill hooked and would NOT make it.
MadNat and GadgetMan on Hegman. Notice the Marmot Precipt. This turned out to be a GREAT idea. and the raingear performed flawlessly. I'm sold on the Marmot products, and even plan on ordering some of their Precipt gear for myself.
A picture of the Hegman Pictographs. These were really neat. As I stated earlier, I think these are the BEST pictographs that I have seen, and are really easy to locate.
Another Pic of the Hegman Pictographs.
A picture of me messing with the Macro settings on my camera. I recently upgraded to a Fuji e550, which is a 6 mp camera. The CCD is capable of capturing images in RAW format at 12 mp, but I cannot afford the memory, not to mention the refresh time for 12 mp. 6 mp is MORE than adequate for me.
Another flower using macro settings.
Bree on the Dry Lake Trail. I believe she is thinking.........Get this DANG pack off me........

Actually, it really was not too heavy, and each girl, and I carried the pack during this daytrip to the Dry Lake Falls.
GadgetMan, Daphne, and the boys Jared and Jordan. They were pretty good kids through the trip.
Elise and Bree at Dry Lake.
Mom and MadNat resting at the 1/2 way point of the trail. This was a pretty neat place to rest with a GREAT view of the lake. The wind was blowing perfectly. Kind of like air conditioning.
What ARE the doing..............All the kids, except Elise, ended up in the water.
Jared and Bree in the whirlpool tub.
Bree really getting in the action.
MadNat Bree, and Jared having a GOOD time in the falls.
Elise NEVER tries anything like this................She did get her feet wet, but didn't want to get in the water. I really don't blame her.
Nice pic of the cabin.
Another nice pic of the cabin. Notice the woodpile. They had LOTS of wood piled up. This is the end of the trip. We used nearly 1/2 of the pile.
One of the only NEAT early morning or late night pics I took during the trip.
A view of the cabin from the water.
A view from the dock.
Loaded and headed back. This trip really went by way TOO Quickly.
